DB CARES -- Giving Back to Our Community
DB has its roots in the community, and our heart is there, too. The company encourages and fully supports activities that allow staff members to identify, develop, and participate in projects that reach into our community to improve the lives of others. These efforts extend far deeper than simply “passing the hat” for charitable contributions; the DB family—from the top down—generously gives time, talent, sweat and hard work. Our “DB Cares” volunteers were recently involved in a variety of important community service efforts:
Holiday Party for Children’s National Medical Center
DB sponsored another successful holiday party for the young patients battling cancer, their families, and staff at Children’s National Medical Center. Special thanks to staff and friends who donated toys, games, pajamas, other gifts, and enough money to buy two 27” TV/DVD combination players mounted on rolling carts that will be used in the infusion room. Here’s an excerpt from the generous “thank you” letter sent by Lynn Hardesty. Manager of the Hematology-Oncology Patient and Family Support Program:
“Thank you for an amazing holiday party for the patients, families, and staff of the Hematology-Oncology unit at Children's National Medical Center on Saturday, December 22, 2007. Each year it seems that the parry gets better and better, and we are very grateful that you put all the pieces together for us.
Please thank Santa Claus, or as he is better known in some circles, your President Gerald Boyd, Jr., for taking time during his busy season to spend several hours with us, and tell all of the elves that we could not have distributed that huge mountain of toys and games without them. We are grateful for the support and guidance from the chief elves, executive staff Vice Presidents Sheila Harley and Dr. Anton Bizzell. I am amazed at the generosity of your donors - you brought such wonderful gifts, and there were appropriate gifts for the teen-agers (always a hard group to buy for) as well as for the infants. The children in the middle are the easy - and fun - ones to buy for, and those gifts were creative, delightful, and very well-received. Even though most of the children were happy to take several gifts, we amazingly had gifts left over. I saved a few special gifts to give out after the holiday rush - for birthdays and as rewards for bravery during painful procedures - and we gave the rest away to in-patients who were admitted right before Christmas.”

Hearts and Hammers
More than a dozen DB volunteers braved the chilly damp weather in early November to help bring some warmth and sunshine to Ms. Mae Pulliam’s home in Arlington, VA. In the third of our “fix-up” projects, we were able to paint the outside walls, fence, and porch rail; install safety rails in the bath; refurbish some kitchen cabinetry; repair a badly damaged outer door frame; and build a deck, rail and ramp to help Ms. Pulliam, a widow living alone, safely enjoy her steeply-sloped yard.

Third Annual Blood Drive
DB staff members and Metro Plaza office neighbors rolled up their sleeves and the Red Cross rolled their mobile blood donation equipment into our conference room. The result? We received 45 donations and generated 31 productive units of blood and blood products that helped meet the needs of our community. The Red Cross says that more than 1300 blood donations are needed every day: a single shock trauma victim can use 100 units of blood in a few hours; a liver transplant operation usually requires a minimum of 50 units of blood; red blood cells help patients with chronic anemia; plasma benefits patients with clotting disorders or serious burns; platelets help patients undergoing cancer therapy.
