January 2008 DB Consulting Leads National Efforts with CDC in Support of National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day, February 7, 2008 (Silver Spring, Maryland, January 22, 2008) – On February 7, 2008, African American leaders and organizations will respond to the impact of HIV and AIDS in neighborhoods and communities across the nation in the seventh annual observance of National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day (NBHAAD). Events will encourage citizens to get educated, get tested, get treated and get involved in the effort to control the HIV/AIDS epidemic that continues to devastate African American communities. DB Consulting Group is proud of our deep involvement in nationwide efforts to combat the spread of HIV/AIDS among African American women and men. Through our work with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), DB provides support to the organizers CDC National AIDS Awareness Day Programs in partnership with the Capacity Building Branch of CDC’s National Center for HIV/AIDS, STD and TB Prevention. Our services ensure broad-based communication and cooperation among various national planning committees, including support to the organizers of Awareness Days targeting African American, Hispanic/Latino Americans, Americans of Asian and Pacific Islander background, and American Indian/Alaska Natives/Native Hawaiians. “While African Americans make up approximately 13 percent of the population of the United States, almost half of the total AIDS cases reported in this country is among members of the Black community. Seventy-two African Americans become infected with HIV every day,” said Anton C. Bizzell, MD, Vice President of Health and Clinical Services at DB Consulting Group. “We at DB Consulting stand proud in partnering and leading national efforts with the organizers of National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day 2008.” According to Dr. Bizzell, the success of National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day stems from the efforts of the seven organizations that work in partnership with the CDC to ensure the success of the national event: Alliances for Quality Education; Healthy Black Communities, Inc.; Jackson State University - Mississippi Urban Research Center; My Brother's Keeper, Inc.; National Alliance of State and Territorial AIDS Directors; National Black Alcoholism & Addictions Council; and National Black Leadership Commission on AIDS. In addition to the organizers, numerous celebrities, political leaders, and influential citizens support this national awareness campaign. These committed leaders include Soldier and Statesman Colin Powell, Recording Artist Pattie LaBelle, Actress Angela Bassett, U.S. Representative Elijah E. Cummings, Indianapolis Colts Head Coach Tony Dungy, U.S. Representative Kendrick P. Meek, Actress, Singer and Activist Sheryl Lee Ralph, U.S. Representative Maxine Waters, Actor Hill Harper, and Singer and Actress Vanessa Williams to name a few.
