DB CARES -- Giving Back to Our Community

DB has its roots in the community, and our heart is there, too. The company encourages and fully supports activities that allow staff members to identify, develop, and participate in projects that reach into our community to improve the lives of others. These efforts extend far deeper than simply “passing the hat” for charitable contributions; the DB family—from the top down—generously gives time, talent, sweat and hard work. During 2007, our “DB Cares” volunteers were involved in a variety of important community service efforts:

One of the most successful activities was DB Cares’ second annual blood drive, which was held in February and was kicked off by Dr. Charlene Drew Jarvis – daughter of Dr. Charles Drew, the African American medical scientist who pioneered new methods in the field of blood transfusions, developing improved techniques for blood storage, and applied his expert knowledge in developing large-scale blood banks. DB invited blood donors from throughout the downtown Silver Spring business community and collected enough blood to save the lives of 187 people.

In April, a crew of DB “Hearts and Hammers” volunteers provided much-needed repair and renovation at the home of an Alexandria, VA woman who is raising her learning-impaired teenage grandson. DB employees and friends painted, landscaped, repaired a deck and storage building, and rebuilt fences in a day-long effort involving nearly two dozen volunteers.

In June, DB Cares volunteer walkers joined the 2007 Komen Race for the Cure, a nationwide effort that raises significant funds and awareness for the fight against breast cancer, celebrates breast cancer survivorship, and honors those who have lost their battle with the disease.
