Background

In 2001, CSAT expanded its efforts and conducted several focus group meetings with faith-based and grassroots organizations to identify and eliminate regulatory and programmatic barriers that hinder the delivery of effective treatment and equal opportunity to some groups competing for Federal funding and support. Some of these barriers include: inadequate financial systems for handling the funding award; lack of access to Federal grant information and the complexity of grant applications and grant agreements.

The outgrowth of these meetings was the identification of Technical Assistance (TA) as a critical factor to the success of faith-based and grassroots community organizations in their efforts to successfully compete for grant funds and deliver quality treatment services in their communities.

To this end, SAMHSA is sponsoring TA and training workshops to assist with the development of grant proposals and programs that provide relevant information about grant writing, grantmanship techniques, substance abuse and HIV/AIDS. The TA and training will enhance the knowledge, skills and abilities of eligible applicants to develop a competitive grant application and effectively serve their communities. One-on-one TA will be provided during the workshops where participants will have the opportunity to speak with instructors and receive the assistance necessary to be successful. Workshops will also provide a forum for networking and a platform to ask questions about the grant application process.
